Mayhem 2017

St Mary’s celebrated the month of May with “Mayhem”– a parish dinner. Many thanks to all those who made the food, served at the tables, helped behind the scenes, and provided the musical entertainment and quiz.

The Singers in concert April 2017

The latest in our series of recitals, St Mary’s Singers– who sing at our monthly baptism service at St Mary’s– led a varied evening’s concert which include audience participation, piano duets, solos from “A Sound of Music”, Gilbert and Sullivan, and much more. It was a splendid evening, at which we remembered the late Arthur Mathews, who was so instrumental in organizing the recitals and running front-of-house for so many years. He will be much missed, and it seemed fitting that on this day the winner of the Grand National was “One for Arthur”!

Getting ready for Christmas

The parish choir sang carols at Ewell Yule in Ewell Village:

Decorating the church for Christmas:

Many thanks to all who made the above possible, and to all involved in the six school carol services and nativities we have hosted in the run up to Christmas. It has been good to welcome over 1900 pupils, teachers, and parents to church over this time.

New projection system

In October 2016 we installed a projector and screen in St Mary’s. When out of use the screen retracts up behind the chancel arch, so it is completely hidden. When deployed, it can be put to many uses. On the first Sunday of use, the Vicar referred to a painting by Fra Angelico in his sermon, illustrated on the screen. Then after the service, over coffee, we were able to watch a video on the new diocesan strategy.

Many thanks to the Golden Hours Fellowship and others, whose donations made this possible, to our contractors SFL, and to all those involved in the installation.

A Day for All 2016

On 24 September St Mary’s Church was open for our annual ‘Day for All’ with lots of activities for everyone, including swop shop, craft activities for children, a guided tour of the church, a free bread and soup lunch, a talk about Nonsuch Palace and Morris dancing by Ewell St Mary’s Morris Men. Lots of people from the local community as well as members of St Mary’s came along to enjoy the day.

Patronal Festival 2016

As our church is dedicated to St Mary, we keep a Sunday near 8th September– the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary– as our patronal festival.

This year, the celebrant and preacher was the Bishop of Dorking, the Rt Revd Dr Jo Bailey Wells, in her first parochial visit as since being consecrated Bishop.

You can hear the Bishop’s sermon using the audio player below:

Before the Eucharist, the Bishop blessed our new white High Mass set of vestments, donated by a parishioner.

Giving to Support St Mary’s – May 2016

On 22 May 2016, we launched our campaign “Giving to Support St Mary’s”. Our aim is to encourage more people to become regular, planned givers to St Mary’s, and for everyone to review their giving.

We hope that visitors to this website might also like to hear the presentation, and the contents of the packs given out in church are also reproduced below. Please do be in touch if you have any questions or if you would like to make a regular gift to St Mary’s.

Audio recording of presentations given by Russell Dewhurst and Nigel Bird (apologies the first minute of the recording is missing)

Spring Market 2016

The Spring Market is our annual sale of plants, cakes, books, and bric-a-brac with a cafe and raffle. Always popular, this year’s was no exception, raising the wonderful total of £846 towards the expenses of putting on Ewell Village Fair. Many thanks to all involved for a great day!

Beating the bounds 2016

On 1 May 2016, some of us “beat the bounds” of our parish. It was a glorious day, and after a hymn and a prayer in church, we set off on our way from the church hall.

The parish boundary runs along the railway line, but rather than take our lives into our hands, we walked along the nearest roads, and crossed the railway line at the footbridge.

After a picnic at the Gibraltar recreation ground, we continued on our way enjoying the beautiful weather. We entered Nonsuch park where we recreated the ancient practice of beating boundary stones– hence the name, “beating the bounds.”

Outside Nonsuch Park some of the party had to go, but the rest of us continued on the rest of the walk, 9 miles in total.

The Hogsmill river forms part of the parish boundary. Again, we didn’t wade through the middle of the river, but walked alongside it, crossing it as necessary.

After fortifying ourselves at Ewell Court tea rooms, we completed the boundary, returning the church around 4.30pm. Here are those who completed the whole route:
