What is the Mothers' Union?

The Mothers' Union is a world-wide society whose aim is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.

The purpose of the Mothers' Union is to be specially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.

The Five Objects are:

  • To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.
  • To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
  • To maintain a world-wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
  • To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
  • To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

The Mothers' Union:

  • Was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner. It was started in a sitting room with a few Mums and babies.
  • Now has 1/4million members world-wide.
  • Has 72 Branches in Guildford Diocese
  • Has links of prayer and concern around the world.
  • Has recognition from Government and statutory bodies as a voice to be heard.
  • Has Christian concern for families world-wide.

MU members are male, female, single, married, divorced or widowed, young, or old. They are Christian people who are committed to the Aims and Objects of the Society.

Many are involved in their own parish and community life.

All are helped and strengthened by the prayer and support of other members.
